ICAD — the daily Index Card a Day project hosted by Tammy Garcia of Daisy Yellow — kicks off June 1. This will be my return after a year off to have my daughter, and I’ve been preparing cards.
I’m still figuring out exactly what I want to do, but I know that I want to return to paint. Over the past several years, I’ve leaned more into minimalism and mostly used tempera paint sticks, colored pencils, and acrylic markers and ink as mark-making materials in my art journal. I recently looked back at my old journals and was inspired to pull out my paints again.
My daughter helped me fingerpaint footpaint backgrounds, and I collaged some elements on top. I experimented with adding paint — with my fingers, with a paintbrush, using masking tape — but I’m out of practice and don’t like the results.
Then, I thought about these back-to-back pages I created in my Amsterdam journal (Baltimore VI):

I like the graphic feel of these pages and the balance of wild/intuitive and controlled/geometric elements. So next, I’m going to try cut pieces from handmade collage papers, a la Matisse.
I’ve painted a whole bunch of block colors onto ordinary copy paper and they’re currently drying in the sun.

Will I like this, or scrap it entirely? Stick around to find out.
